Outline Creation Tool
Posted on 1/31/2011 4:06:24 AM
Several months back I had an idea to create a web-based outlining tool. The idea came to me because I’ve been wanting a complete outline for Taking Control as I have made a couple slips recently in contradicting things I had written previously. Having a complete outline to reference would help alleviate such issues. Being the lazy man I am, I didn’t want to do it myself and had been trying to convince Maggie to do it for me. She had started and stopped the process a few times, but it was always just too tedious and counter-intuitive for her to keep it up.

Enter my fancy, new outlining tool. Not only is it designed to make the process easier, it was also meant to be a cool new toy that would make the process somewhat interesting for Maggie, at least for a little bit, as she got to play with the new toy. This was great in theory, but there were a few flaws in the design that halted progress. I’ve only just now finally gotten back into the project and fixed things up, and they appear to be working much better now.

Now that the core functionality is built out, I’ve found myself wondering what others would think about it. Would they find it useful? If I built a site around the tool, allowing users to upload their own content to create their own outlines, even offering the options to share the content and outlines with other users of their choice, would people use it?

Which brings us to the present. I’m looking for opinions on the tool, and you are just the people for it. I’ve setup a test chapter with public access to the outline for you all to play with it, try it out, and see what you think about it. Any comments or criticisms you have can be shared either in the comments here or the reviews for the test chapter. Now, before you get started, you’ll need to know how it all works.

You can find instructions on how to use the outline tool at

You can access the outline test chapter in the normal navigation under Read, or use the following link:

Please check it out and let me know what you think.

Email Notifications Update
Posted on 1/24/2010 6:39:40 PM
As evidenced by the fact that no emails went out with the last news post, there was an issue with the notifications that I believe I now have fixed. Please let me know either in this forum or through email if you are not receiving emails and remember to set up your email notifications by logging in and clicking the Manage Account link.

And because no email went out with the last post, let me provide a quick update. There is now a Recent Activity section on the homepage showing recent forum posts and recommendations. Also, you now have the ability to sign up for email notifications for all forum postings.

Minor Site Update

I just wanted to make everyone aware of a couple more updates to the site. One update you will see on top of the homepage is Recent Activity, which will alert you of any Forum posts or Recommendations added in the last week.

Also, you now have the ability to subscribe to be emailed to all forum posts. I'm not sure why I hadn't included that option from the start, but you can do so now. You can change your email notification settings by logging in and clicking the Manage Account link in the top right corner of the site.

Site Remodeling
Posted on 12/16/2009 10:14:04 PM
I was never happy with the way the site looked and had planned on remodeling it from the start, so naturally it took me nearly a year to get around to it. It's still not anything special, but I've never had any sort of talent for design so the fact that I don't hate it, to me, is a big plus. I have some other things I'd like to fix as well, if I get the time and inclination, most prevalent on my mind being adjusting the home page to display recent activity on the site. That way you don't see several-month-old bits of news every time you bring up the home page. No idea when that will be ready though.

Let me know what you think about the changes, and if you run into any issues don't hesitate to let me know either in the forums or email.

Tentative Title Chosen
Posted on 2/17/2009 2:59:24 PM
Hello all! After months of agonizing over it, I've finally decided on a tentative title for Taking Control's sequel: Free Life.

The new title is inspired by the song "Free Life" by Dan Wilson, whom music fans might better remember as the lead singer/songwriter of the band Semisonic. If you are interested, you can check him out at

As for the progress of the actual story itself, I know that word counter has been stuck at 8000 for a while, but that is actually rather close to completion. Hopefully with the title finally chosen, that'll be one less thing for my mind to worry about, and I can finally get back into the grind and get things rolling again. Until then, keep checking back here for updates, and if you haven't read it yet, check out the sneak peek.
